As Damien Walter noted recently on twitter, some time between 1995 and 2010, the human species began to develop functional telepathy. (Actually, the first sign of this became real on October 29th, 1969, but exponential growth from a small base takes a long time to become noticeable.) We now have over a billion human beings on the internet, and so many devices that the IPv4 address space is saturated: within the next decade we can expect multiple new satellite internet constellations (such as OneWeb and rivals) to bring pervasive internet access to the globe. Smartphones are pushing down into the sub-$50 space where they're affordable even by those living just at the global poverty threshold (and the decline in global poverty over the past decade is working away at the other end). It no longer looks implausible to suggest that almost everybody will be online by 2025.

Die USA haben die Netzneutralität gesetzlich garantiert, weil sie kleinen Start-Ups nutzt und die Meinungsfreiheit unterstützt. Europa schafft sie ab – und das als ersten Schritt für den neuen Digitalen Binnenmarkt, den Günther Oettinger schaffen will.

In 2013 at Institute for the Future, the non-profit forecasting thinktank where I'm a researcher, we explored what we're calling the Coming Age of Networked Matter. Over the next few decades, a confluence of breakthroughs in physics, engineering, biology, computation, and complexity science will give us new lenses to observe the wondrous interconnections surrounding us and within us. In the future we’re moving toward, we won’t only observe complex systems, we’ll also modify and even create them in vivo and with purpose. It will be an era of huge possibility, daunting pitfalls, and high weirdness. To help make this future tangible, we commissioned some of our favorite writers of speculative fiction -- Cory Doctorow, Rudy Rucker, Ramez Naam, Bruce Sterling, Madeline Ashby, and Warren Ellis -- to write short stories tied to our research theme. Ich kann die Verklärung von Heiligen Schriften, egal ob Thora, Bibel oder Koran, als "Bücher der Liebe" nicht nachvollziehen. In Frankreich gab es 1572 die Bartholomäusnacht, als Katholiken im ganzen Land Protestanten massakrierten. Der ganze moderne säkulare Staat hat sich herausgebildet zur Verhinderung des konfessionellen Bürgerkriegs, und das hat mindestens eineinhalb Jahrhunderte gedauert. Die Aufklärung ihrerseits hat sich gegen die katholische Kirche nicht in einem friedlichen Dialog durchgesetzt, sondern mit Hilfe von Feuer und Schwert sowie der Guillotine. Die Kirche hat wiederum alle Ketzer, solange sie die Macht dazu hatte, blutig verfolgt.
