The culture that feels the most dangerous, and, thus, exciting to young people, will be what you can’t see online. And the most dangerous thing for platforms is not racist garbage. It’s unmonetizeable content. The “metric” that will matter most going forward will not be the numbers at the bottom of a post or video, but the human beings in a room that left their house to experience something. Which, of course, will be filmed and put back online. You can’t escape the matrix entirely.
"You have to essentially pre-deplatform yourself."
For young people, "the only things that have the level of scarcity and danger required to be seen as cool" are "whatever is unacceptable on those platforms." In other words, anything (and maybe only things) that're blocked or banned are a candidate to be cool. Cool people walk away from the places where you'd expect to find them and hang out in places that are culturally viewed as less important.
“Top-down mandates to use large language models are crazy,” one employee told Wired. “If the tool were good, we’d all just use it.”
They’re also required to send weekly update emails to him, echoing Elon Musk’s DOGE requirement for federal staffers to summarize five weekly achievements in emails. (The requirement was mostly ignored, months before DOGE largely crumbled.)
Dorsey then reportedly uses generative AI to summarize his staffers’ emails. During the all-hands meeting, he noted that “performance anxiety” and “widespread concerns about layoffs” were clearly vexing staff.
It was reported in the Dutch press that Microsoft told the ICC the sanctions meant it had to deny Khan access to its services. The report said the ICC would have to end the chief prosecutor's access to the services, otherwise Microsoft would end the email services for the whole organization. The ICC then decided to suspend Kahn's email services.
In a major privacy change, Telegram is opening the door to sharing user data, including IP addresses and phone numbers, with law enforcement.
On Monday, Telegram CEO Pavel Durov announced the change after vowing to crack down on illegal activities on the messaging platform following his arrest in France.
During the incident, the system hit 3000 IOPS and stayed there. It didn’t recover on its oown. We had to kill connections manually. Why? What was actually happening inside Postgres that made the situation self-sustaining? I had a wrong mental model for days. This post is about fixing that.
If you're not gonna bother writing it yourself, I ain't gonna bother reading it myself. - Geoff Graham
More than a decade after Aaron Swartz’s death, the United States is still living inside the contradiction that destroyed him.
Swartz believed that knowledge, especially publicly funded knowledge, should be freely accessible. Acting on that, he downloaded thousands of academic articles from the JSTOR archive with the intention of making them publicly available. For this, the federal government charged him with a felony and threatened decades in prison. After two years of prosecutorial pressure, Swartz died by suicide on Jan. 11, 2013.
The still-unresolved questions raised by his case have resurfaced in today’s debates over artificial intelligence, copyright and the ultimate control of knowledge.
Damit will man die Herausgabe verhindern. Die Opposition wirft der ÖVP fehlende Transparenz vor.
I am on record as being skeptical of the notion that if you shop very carefully, you can make society better. "Conscious consumption" is not a tool for structural change, and any election that requires you to "vote with your wallet" is always won by the people with the thickest wallets (statistically speaking, that's not you)...
Now, that's not to say that boycotts are useless. But a boycott is a structured and organized campaign.
The story of how MS-DOS became the industry standard for the 16-bit business computers at the expense of Digital Research’s CP/M is somewhat of a legend among fans of computing history. The event has been described in books, articles and documentaries, with most of them focusing on entertaining details such as corporate drama, back-stabbing and nepotism1.
Some of the more serious accounts mention one important detail of the story: DRI was late with the port of the CP/M to the Intel 8086. When IBM representatives visited in August of 1980, looking for an operating system for their upcoming PC, only the 8-bit version of CP/M could be demonstrated. IBM eventually turned to Microsoft and selected what became MS‑DOS.
In this article, we will examine why CP/M‑86 was delayed and, in the end, speculate how much that delay actually mattered.
Computer History Museum software curator Al Kossow has successfully retrieved the contents of the over-half-a-century old tape found at the University of Utah last month.
UNIX V4, the first ever version of the UNIX operating system in which the kernel was written in the then-new C programming language, has been successfully recovered from a 1970s nine-track tape drive. You can download it from the Internet Archive, and run it in SimH.
Provocative reports claim Agile projects have a failure rate of up to 65 percent, while others claim up to 90 percent of DevOps initiatives fail to meet organizational expectations.
It is best to be wary of these claims while also acknowledging that successfully implementing Agile or DevOps methods takes consistent leadership, organizational discipline, patience, investment in training, and culture change.
However, the same requirements have always been true when introducing any new software platform. Given the historic lack of organizational resolve to instill proven practices, it is not surprising that novel approaches for developing and sustaining ever more complex software systems, no matter how effective they may be, will also frequently fall short.
Global internet shutdowns and growing government control have made access to free information increasingly difficult in countries such as Iran, Russia and China. DW Access addresses this challenge with features that allow users to bypass censorship and stay informed.
"DW is blazing new trails in censorship circumvention. DW Access ensures our audiences can access independent news wherever they are – even under the most challenging conditions," says Guido Baumhauer, Managing Director Distribution, Marketing and Technology at DW.
Unlike most apps today, DW Access is not available in app stores. Users can download it via the dedicated DW platform www.access-unlocked.org
or share it directly via messenger services or Bluetooth. This approach not only ensures independence from major tech companies, it also reduces exposure to government restrictions.
The app includes:
- Integrated VPN (Outline) for secure access
- No personal data transmission for user safety
- Offline functionality with pre-cached content and article sharing via Bluetooth
- Data-saving mode for regions with limited network connectivity
The Trump administration has been heavily invested in consolidating all of the government’s information into a single searchable, or perhaps AI-queryable, super database. The compiling of all of this information is being done with the dubious justification of efficiency and modernization–however, in many cases, this information was originally siloed for important reasons: to protect your privacy, to prevent different branches of government from using sensitive data to punish or harass you, and to perserve the trust in and legitimacy of important civic institutions.
