N5DUX Kite Antenna

On this page, I want to share and document my experiences flying and using a kite antenna. There's nothing too special about a kite antenna. It's a fun, novel approach to the ham's age-old question about where to hang a wire antenna. When I lived inland, I could usually find a tall tree in which to hang an antenna. After relocating to the Galvston Island, tall trees are hard to come by. While the beach may lack trees, it usually does not lack wind.
A kite antenna setup is pretty straight forward and once you deploy it a couple times, it's downright simple. The key factor is having enough wind!

Kite Antennas – South Bristol Amateur Radio Club

Admittedly, we already have a page about our kite antenna exploits which makes for interesting reading. However those pages are about the practical use of these antennas. This talk given by Henryk M0HTB covers some of the background and the equipment considerations to supplement the practical exploits.

How to properly manage ssh keys for server access :: Päpper's Coding Blog — Have fun coding.

You still generate a public-private key pair for each developer. However, you don’t upload the public keys to your servers.

Instead, you sign the public keys with a so-called certificate authority (CA) key which you generate before. This signing simply generates a third certificate file which you give back to the developer and they put it inside of their .ssh/ folder next to the private and public key.

On the servers, you simply tell the server the public key of your CA and the server can detect if a user has a properly signed certificate and only allows access to the developers who have such a signed certificate.

The Structure of Scientific Revolutions: 50th Anniversary Edition: Amazon.de: Kuhn, Thomas S., Hacking, Ian: Fremdsprachige Bücher

With The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, Kuhn challenged long-standing linear notions of scientific progress, arguing that transformative ideas don’t arise from the day-to-day, gradual process of experimentation and data accumulation but that the revolutions in science, those breakthrough moments that disrupt accepted thinking and offer unanticipated ideas, occur outside of “normal science,” as he called it. Though Kuhn was writing when physics ruled the sciences, his ideas on how scientific revolutions bring order to the anomalies that amass over time in research experiments are still instructive in our biotech age.

This new edition of Kuhn’s essential work in the history of science includes an insightful introduction by Ian Hacking, which clarifies terms popularized by Kuhn, including paradigm and incommensurability, and applies Kuhn’s ideas to the science of today. Usefully keyed to the separate sections of the book, Hacking’s introduction provides important background information as well as a contemporary context. Newly designed, with an expanded index, this edition will be eagerly welcomed by the next generation of readers seeking to understand the history of our perspectives on science.

No, I didn't kill the dead human. If I had, I wouldn't dump the body in the station mall.

When Murderbot discovers a dead body on Preservation Station, it knows it is going to have to assist station security to determine who the body is (was), how they were killed (that should be relatively straightforward, at least), and why (because apparently that matters to a lot of people—who knew?)

Yes, the unthinkable is about to happen: Murderbot must voluntarily speak to humans!

RC2014 Pro - Homebrew Z80 Computer Kit from RFC2795 Ltd on Tindie

RC2014 is a range of homebrew computer kits reminiscent of what was available in the late 70s / early 80s. They are not a clone of anything specific, but there are suggestions of the ZX81, UK101, S100, Superboard II and Apple I in there.

The RC2014 Pro is a modular computer with an 12 slot enhanced backplane. It has a Z80 CPU running at 7.3728MHz, 64k RAM, Microsoft BASIC on ROM, or CP/M 2.2 on Compact Flash and communicates over serial at 115,200bps via a Zilog SIO/2 UART. The backplane allows expansion modules such as official RC2014 Modules or a selection of 3rd party "Designed for RC2014" modules. The design is simple, and the standard 0.1" pitch headers encourages building your own add-ons.

James Ball's "The System" – Pluralistic: Daily links from Cory Doctorow

The conceit of The System is fiendishly clever and effective: Ball explains how each layer of the internet works, starting with the wires and working his way up the stack through protocol designers, governance, businesses, regulators, reformers and revolutionaries.

Each chapter is a mix of admirably clear explanations of often abstruse and technical systems, and keen-eyed profiles of representative individuals involved in them – storytelling and exposition, playing off against one another.

Chrome Root Program - The Chromium Projects

Historically, Chrome has integrated with the Root Store provided by the platform on which it is running. Chrome is in the process of transitioning certificate verification to use a common implementation on all platforms where it's under application control, namely Android, Chrome OS, Linux, Windows, and macOS. Apple policies prevent the Chrome Root Store and verifier from being used on Chrome for iOS. This will ensure users have a consistent experience across platforms, that developers have a consistent understanding of Chrome's behavior, and that Chrome will be better able to protect the security and privacy of users' connections to websites.

For CAs that already participate in other public Root Programs, such as the Mozilla Root Program, many of these requirements and processes should be familiar.

During this transition, the Chrome Root Store contains a variety of existing Certification Authorities' certificates that have historically worked in Chrome on the majority of supported platforms. This promotes interoperability on different devices and platforms, and minimizes compatibility issues. This should ensure as seamless a transition as possible for users.

In addition to compatibility considerations, CAs have been selected on the basis of past and current publicly available and verified information, such as that within the Common CA Certificate Database (CCADB).

For Certification Authorities that have not been included as part of this initial Chrome Root Store, questions can be directed to chrome-root-authority-program@google.com. Priority is given to CAs that are widely trusted on platforms that Chrome supports, in order to minimize compatibility issues.

It was originally inspired from the DEX UI project. It is also worth noting that eDEX-UI is no longer maintained but it hasn’t been completely abandoned. You can learn more about the current status of the project here.

Even though eDEX-UI is more about the looks and the futuristic theme for a terminal, it could double up as a system monitoring tool for Linux in the future if the development resumes or if someone else forks it. How? Because it shows system stats in the sidebar while you work in the terminal.

Graduate class: "Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment" at Stevens Institute of Technology

In this course, students will learn to develop complex system-level software in the C programming language while gaining an intimate understanding of the Unix operating system (and all OS that belong to this family, such as Linux, the BSDs, and even Mac OS X) and its programming environment.

Topics covered will include the user/kernel interface, fundamental concepts of Unix, user authentication, basic and advanced I/O, fileystems, signals, process relationships, and interprocess communication. Fundamental concepts of software development and maintenance on Unix systems (development and debugging tools such as "make" and "gdb") will also be covered.

Students are expected to have a good working knowledge of the C programming language, have written non-trivial programs before, and to be able to competently use a Unix system with a command-line shell interface. All coursework will be done exclusively on a Unix system from the command-line. This is not an introduction to using Unix!

grep - News: grep-3.5 released [stable] [Savannah]

Changes in behavior

The message that a binary file matches is now sent to standard error
and the message has been reworded from "Binary file FOO matches" to
"grep: FOO: binary file matches", to avoid confusion with ordinary
output or when file names contain spaces and the like, and to be
more consistent with other diagnostics. For example, commands
like 'grep PATTERN FILE | wc' no longer add 1 to the count of
matching text lines due to the presence of the message. Like other
stderr messages, the message is now omitted if the --no-messages
(-s) option is given.

Two other stderr messages now use the typical form too. They are
now "grep: FOO: warning: recursive directory loop" and "grep: FOO:
input file is also the output".

The --files-without-match (-L) option has reverted to its behavior
in grep 3.1 and earlier. That is, grep -L again succeeds when a
line is selected, not when a file is listed. The behavior in grep
3.2 through 3.4 was causing compatibility problems.

There are some things to say about this, but the first thing you might wonder is why the newgrp command exists at all. The best answer is that it's mostly a Unix historical relic (or, to put it another way, a fossil).

Diving into /proc/[pid]/mem

My internship was under the Emerging Technologies and Incubation group on a project involving gVisor. A co-worker contacted my team about not being able to read the debug symbols of stack traces inside the sandbox. For example, when the isolated process crashed, this is what we saw in the logs:

Check failure stack trace:
@ 0x7ff5f69e50bd (unknown)
@ 0x7ff5f69e9c9c (unknown)
@ 0x7ff5f69e4dbd (unknown)
@ 0x7ff5f69e55a9 (unknown)
@ 0x5564b27912da (unknown)
@ 0x7ff5f650ecca (unknown)
@ 0x5564b27910fa (unknown)

Obviously, this wasn't very useful. I eagerly volunteered to fix this stack unwinding code - how hard could it be?

New Laws of Robotics: Defending Human Expertise in the Age of AI (Affiliate Link)

Too many CEOs tell a simple story about the future of work: if a machine can do what you do, your job will be automated. They envision everyone from doctors to soldiers rendered superfluous by ever-more-powerful AI. They offer stark alternatives: make robots or be replaced by them.

Another story is possible. In virtually every walk of life, robotic systems can make labor more valuable, not less. Frank Pasquale tells the story of nurses, teachers, designers, and others who partner with technologists, rather than meekly serving as data sources for their computerized replacements. This cooperation reveals the kind of technological advance that could bring us all better health care, education, and more, while maintaining meaningful work. These partnerships also show how law and regulation can promote prosperity for all, rather than a zero-sum race of humans against machines.

A Linux sysadmin's introduction to cgroups | Enable Sysadmin

So you've heard of this thing called cgroups, and you are interested in finding out more. Perhaps you caught mention of it while listening to a talk about containerization. Maybe you were looking into Linux performance tuning, or perhaps you just happened to be traversing your file system one day and discovered /sys/fs/cgroups. Either way, you want to learn more about this functionality that has been baked into the kernel for quite some time. So sit back, grab some popcorn, and prepare to (hopefully) learn something you may not have known before.

Jan-Piet Mens :: It used to be simpler to teach

Today in some versions of Linux ls puts single quotes around file names which contain white space likely in order to have those paths easier to copy and paste, but it does so only if !isatty().

I’m not a great fan of changing a program’s well-known behaviour, specially in a case such as with GNU ls which already uses an environment variable for coloring output; it would likely have been easy to augment that for the file name quoting.

It used to be simpler to teach. (But I don’t really teach Unix beginners any more.) :-)

SSH defaults, config, and priorities | Root

Over the years I’ve collected a rather messy ~/.ssh/config which resulted in some undesired behavior as a result of me misunderstanding how the config file prioritizes its options.

Today I investigated that.
In short, this is what I found:

Priority goes from top to bottom
Defaults MUST come last
Host specificity is NOT a factor of priority
Host sections can be specified multiple times
Multiple hostnames (and aliases) may be specified per section
Host sections apply to the name you use (not what it resolves to)

Mutt 2.0 Release Notes

Backward Incompatible Changes

This release was bumped to 2.0, not because of the magnitude of features (which is actually smaller than past releases), but because of a few changes that are backward incompatible. Please read this list carefully to be aware of these changes:

When using <attach-file> to browse and add multiple attachments to an email, you may use <quit> to exit after tagging the files. Previously, "enter" had to be pressed on a non-directory file. This was awkward and non-intuitive.
The default value of some configuration variables is translatable. Those are marked with type string (localized) in the manual. Examples include $attribution and $status_format.
$ssl_force_tls defaults set. If this sounds familiar, that's because I tried this before in the 1.13.0 release, but reverted it after some breakage. I'm trying again with a major revision number bump. If you need to connect to a non-encrypted site, you will need to turn this setting off yourself.
<decode-copy> and <decode-save> no longer perform header weeding by default. Header weeding can be toggled back on by setting $copy_decode_weed.
$hostname is set after processing the muttrc and -e command-line arguments. This was done to provide a way to skip DNS lookups of the FQDN, which on some systems can result in a delay when starting up.
$reply_to is processed before $reply_self.
Normal configuration variables (as opposed to user-defined my variables) were previously escaped when used on the right hand side of an assignment. Newline was converted to "\n", carriage return to "\r", tab to "\t", backslash and double quotes were backslash escaped. This was a bug, but a long-standing one, so I note the change here.
